A
pair of thoughtfully modelled, very well cast metal kits of the brutal
TWR run coupes. The 1983 car is the white Motul car with bright green
side stripes and the rear mounted 'oil cooler' and is modelled as
the Donington winning car of Fitzpatrick, Calderari and a young upstart
called Brundle. The 1984 car is the BRG Jaguar Deutschland car that
Walkinshaw and Heyer led home a Jaguar 1,2,3 at Brno on the way to
Walkinshaw's championship victory. The kits are based on the previously
released XJS road car kit with excellent ancillary white metal parts
and p/e details. Only one option is available on the decal sheets
but with some spares box raiding it should be possible to build some
alternative versions and race results are included in the instructions.
It is necessary to drill out the rear fuel fillers on the boot lid
using the guide holes on the inside of the shell but this is not made
clear in the otherwise excellent instructions. These kits are showing
that SMTS are making strides to improve their models and should be
a joy to build.

| A re-issue of our
kit based on PM's excellent resin XJS kit. The subject is the white
Motul sponsored car with green side stripes modelled as it ran at
Monza with the controversial rear under-body 'oil cooler'. The drivers
were Walkinshaw and Nicholson and they finished 2nd. |

the plastic kit masters is the stunning Porsche GT3 road car. It is
superbly moulded with a bright yellow body shell and grey and black

Another selection of colourful subjects from Mini Racing. All cast in superbly crisp resin and with the exception of the BMW all with 'bathtub' interiors which can make detail painting rather fiddly. The white metal ancillaries in all these kits is excellent, the vac-formed windows are perfectly clear and the decals are sharply printed. In the Xsara kit there are a strange pair of vac-forms that fit the rear flanks of the car. We queried this with Mini Racing and they say these are to replicate the body protectors fitted to the cars for testing, unfortunately the instructions do not refer to these pieces. The car was of course the one that nearly won the Catalunya round of the World Rally Championship in the hands of Bugalski only to robbed by clutch problems. How the Ascona did we cannot find any reference but it is very attractive. The winning Saab from Sweden was driven by Blomqvist, and the Datsun by Mehta, who won four Safaris on the trot in the late 70's / early 80's. Russell Brookes finished 4th on the RAC with his bright yellow Sunbeam and Eric Cayrolle was a consistent front runner in the French super-touring series, he is now racing this car in the FIA European series.

There are many after-market decals available for the Tamiya Quattro kit but most are for wide bodied cars and the base kit is the original narrow car, we now have the solution. Previously included in the Monte Carlo transkit, Renaissance have decided to offer their excellent resin body on its own. The transkits and decal sets are produced to the usual very high standard with resin parts where necessary, very well printed decals and clear multi-view drawings as instructions. The resin figures were released some time ago by Eau Rouge and at the time we felt they were superbly sculpted, this opinion has not changed. The inlet trumpets are perfectly turned in aluminium and will add realism to many a 1:43rd model. |
