| Axel-R continue to find
interesting and colourful historic Lotus subjects and this month is
no exception. |
 |
| The fine
Elan kit and hand-built model (see colour shot on the back page of
FSW4-2001) check out for accuracy of line very well against photos
of similar vehicles. The paint finish is excellent as are the ancillary
parts and instructions, though the decals are slightly out of register.
We will have to assume that the livery is accurate on this pretty
yellow and green car as it is competing in modern 'Historic' races
which we cannot find reference for. New for 1969 the Lotus 59B F2
car won first time out at the very fast Thruxton circuit with Jochen
Rindt at the wheel (see photos above and on page 10). This kit captures
the car fairly well and we could only find very minor detail errors
such as a missing Ferodo decal on the instructions -but this is on
the decal sheet so can be rectified. Rindt won again at Pau in France
and this time the instructions appear to be complete and also pick
out the minor differences to the sister car of Graham Hill. The paint
finish is again excellent on both these kits and the white metal suspension
parts are finely cast. Finding research material for these subjects
is very difficult and we finally tracked our photo of the Thruxton
car here down in Autocourse for 1969. Brave new models of which we
agree totally with the instructions: 'Take your time and the result
will be amazing'. Bravo to Mr Dutemple who is the creator of these
fine models. |

| All
of these have been produced by PM and Meri for Make Up Company and
are effectively enhanced re-issues. Both Porsches are based on Starter
bodies, re-cast by PM and with decals and instructions that have been
expertly produced by Make Up. Both will look attractive when finished
and represent interesting parts in the 910/917 history. The Williams,
Tyrrell and Toleman are all based on Meri's excellent metal kits with
the addition of p/e suspension parts. The Williams offers options
for race winner Keke Rosberg or team-mate Jaques Laffite, the Tyrrell
of either the late Michele Alboreto or Danny Sullivan and the Toleman
makes the #20 car of Piercarlo Ghinzagi. The 1986 Benetton is also
a modified Starter with resin body and etched suspension parts. The
drivers were Gerhard Berger and Teo Fabi. |

| For those
of us who are weary of the sight of red Italian sports-cars, this
month's selection from CCC is very welcome. The kits have superbly
cast resin bodies, white metal ancillaries and - where necessary -
plated parts. The instructions are well drawn and the kits - though
very simple - should build well to look stunning. The only problem
we noticed with any of our samples that the base plate in the Panhard
X84 was very thin and will need handling with extreme care. The choice
of subjects is very broad with some being very difficult to research.
Those that we have found pictures of appear to be accurate though
with the Monte Carlo cars we can only find standard road cars so will
have to assume the rally mods are correct. The sight of a rack for
snow shovels built into the rear of the very elegant Delage coupe
is particularly appealing! How any of the Monte cars fared we do not
know but we can help with the Le Mans racers. The yellow Panhard finished
29th in 1950 and was the last car running while the Salmson was forced
to retire with an oil leak in the 9th hour. The Delahaye and Talbot
kits represent two of the most elegant grand tourers ever built and
we found photos of both in the catalogue of the amazing Rosso & Bianco
museum in Germany. We can't wait to see built models of these, especially
the Talbot which is spectacular! The illustrations below - intended
for identification - run in the same order as the models listed above
with the first on the right top, second on the left of it and so on.

A superbly finished hand-built model of the Malcolm Campbell Bluebird
as it raised the land-speed record to 206.95 mph at Ormonde Beach,
Daytona. In a bid to reduce frontal area and aerodynamic drag this
24-litre monster was fitted with large radiators mounted lengthways
either side of the tail. It obviously worked! There's a colour photo
of the model on what's new page 2.
