A
very well built model of one of the many experimental cars tested
by Ferrari. This model represents the car that was tested at Fiorano
with a very deep shovel nose and twin hot air exhaust chimneys on
the side pods.

| Thoughtfully
designed and accurate these kits are relatively simple. On our review
sample there were a few pinholes in the resin for the 2000 saloon
but otherwise everything looks OK. The p/e detailing is very comprehensive
with window frames, interior door panels, dashboard inserts and very
fine exterior trim. |

|
| The
instructions consist of a rather grainy photocopied photograph with
each p/e part numbered and the corresponding trim on the full sized
car indicated. Colour choice is down to individual taste. The Cabrio
is a very elegant grand-tourer while the saloon is a very understated
family car. Both our grainy illustrations are from the kit instructions. |

| Reasonably
well cast and very accurate looking, these should build to look superb.
There were a couple of pinholes in the roof of our saloon kit and
some blemishes that need cleaning up on the coupe, but with careful
preparation these should be no problem. |

|
|
Both kits have a wealth of p/e detail and the only difficult part
we can see is the very curved rear screen on the elegant coupe that
is supplied as flat acetate and with a p/e frame. Get it right and
it will look superb. |

Models - New 1:43rd metal kit and hand built model |

|
| This model,
cast by SMTS, was originally available some years ago under the LSR
Productions banner. |
 |
|
The model is basically an accurate representation of the Rolls-Royce
powered hydroplane with which Sir Malcolm Campbell took the water
speed record to 142mph in 1939. The upper superstructure is well detailed
but the base insert is a very poor fit to the main casting and will
require a fair amount of work to get a smooth joint. This is caused
by the different shrinkage rates as the metal castings cool down and
is very difficult to overcome on castings of this size. The built model
is pretty well finished and mounted on a wooden plinth but is let
down by an unsightly gap at the front caused by the mis-match of the
two main castings |

Marsh
Models continue to come out with spectacular looking and historically
important subjects, the latest Porsche kit is a prime example. The
917/10 supplied to Brumos Racing for the 1972 CanAm was the first
privately run car of its type and was initially entered for Peter
Gregg.
 |
 |
| He
bravely battled with this unwieldy beast until replaced in the team
for 1973 by Hurley Haywood who finished third in the series behind
the similar machine of Follmer and the longer wheelbase 917/30 of
Donohue. The kit offers the option of the '72 or '73 cars and is,
as ever from Marsh, superbly thought out and executed. We've made
it one of our models of the month - see colour shot page 4. Equally
good is the John Mecom run Zerex special (see colour shot on page
21). After the controversy surrounding the original, centre seat,
Zerex, Penske modified the car to have two 'proper' seats and sold
the car to Mecom. Penske still looked after driving duties with high
points being 2nd in the Times GP and 1st in the Guards Trophy. Either
can be built from the kit. The Arciero Brothers Ferrari 375 as driven
by Dan Gurney is a handsome 'different' looking Ferrari but in our
opinion not quite up to the usual impeccable Marsh standards. You
can for example - looking through the p/e side grilles - see daylight
from one side of the car to the other. Desite that - compared with
most other built models - it is still outstandingly good. |

Two reasonably well
finished hand-built models of pretty diverse subjects. The spectacular
white and green, long tailed 917 press car certainly captures the
shape and poise of this monster superbly but the decals appear to
be rather old and yellowed and some of the detail painting around
the windows is a little less than precise. The finish on the Ferrari
is generally much better.
 |

|
| Modelled as Clint Eastwood's
personal car in a dark metallic brown it just goes to show how a basically
attractive design can be ruined when painted a hideous colour, but
someone else can tell Mr Eastwood..... |

Based on the PM kit
that we reviewed in 5/2001 the yellow year 2000 CPA winner is well
finished and offers great value. We are slightly disappointed by the
1997 car though.
 |
 |
Visually
much more exciting, finished in shocking pink and dark blue this ought
to be the more desirable of the two but the decals and fine detailing
are not as well applied and the paint finish is flat. Hopefully future
models will be better as this version is not as yet available in kit
form.
