New 1:43rd resin & metal kits & hand builts
PM2890

Aston Martin DB9 Volante 2004 - kit. Also available PM2890MB - built blue & PM2890MG - built green

£39.55

It seems that Aston Martin can’t release cars quickly enough to keep up with the model makers lately, no sooner does the real thing appear than the first kits do! The lines look very good indeed and there’s a fair level of detail. You will have to source the seat belts (either masking tape or the foil seal from a wine bottle) but all of the hardware is included on the p/e fret, as is now the norm from PM. A nice kit, even if there isn’t the option of a right-hand drive one.

PM2895M

BMW 3.0CSL Le Mans 1977 #71 UFO - built

£75.15

PM2898M

BMW 3.0CSL Le Mans 1975 #93 Calder - built

£75.15

PM2900

BMW 3.0CSL Le Mans 1976 #41 Stella - kit. Also available PM2895, PM2898 - kits & PM2900M (built)

£39.55

Both built models are very well finished and look good, if not 100% accurate. One detail we didn’t notice when looking at the kits is that the side windows look slightly odd. The wind down glass on the real cars had the tiniest frame that is barely visible. Perhaps a good solution for kit builders would be to cut the flat acetate into two panels before fitting to the fine p/e outer frames?

If you enjoy decalling then Frank Stella’s graph-paper car is for you! The principle of the design is represented but it is sadly far from accurate. Each of the larger squares should be divided into a 10x10 grid, not 5x5 as on the decals. The motif on the driver’s door has been printed upside-down and there are also Goodyear decals missing from the rear wing. The last two could be rectified during building but the grids are a major problem.

Ford Fiesta S1600 Press Presentation - kit

£39.55

The replacement for the Puma JWRC car will be based on the big selling Fiesta and the original concept car that was shown to the World’s press features very dramatic styling. PM have captured the aggressive body modifications well and the fade through design of the real cars graphics is superbly reproduced on the kit decals. Let’s hope that the car does make it into serious competition and that it goes as well as it looks.

PM2911M

Ferrari 360 Daytona 2004 Red Bull - built. Also available PM2911 - kit

£75.15

We saw this great looking machine in kit form in the last issue and the hand built shows what it is possible to achieve with careful assembly. The paint finish is excellent and most of the fine details have been carefully applied, though the painting of the headlamp covers is a little rough. The large decal panels sit snuggly into most of the panel lines and have been well lacquered in. We’re still not totally convinced by the shade of blue used, in race photos that we have it looks a little brighter but that might just be reproduction.
PM2913

Spyker C8 Spyder T 2003 - kit. Also available PM2913M - built

£39.55

Another proof that manufacturers read our ‘wanted’ list! This was always an obvious progression from the Spyker race car and progress is certainly what has been made! There are a number of nice touches which should make this an enjoyable build project. For example, those scoops that need to be given a polished metal finish are now supplied as separate inserts, making painting or polishing a much simpler job. Good stuff.

PM2912

Fabcar FDS03 Daytona 2004 Team Gunnar - kit. Also available PM2912M - built

£39.55

The Daytona 24 Hours always features a number of attractively decorated cars and this year was no exception. Occasionally there is one that really stands out as a must have, regardless of collecting theme, and we feel that the Gunnar Racing Fabcar Porsche is one such. This spectacular machine with it’s classic hot-rodders black and flames livery included Paul Newman in the driver line up and PM have done an excellent job of reproducing the vivid decoration. Go on, you know you want to!
PM2914

Peugeot RC Cup Press 2004 - kit. Also avilable PM2914M - built

£39.55

Peugeot have developed their RC concept car, first shown at the 2002 Geneva Salon, and developed it into a race car for a one-make series running on bio-diesel. PM have followed suit, using their RC kit (PM2725) and updating it to capture the little racer very well. The decal sheet includes a huge number of race numbers, so you can mix and match to your heart’s content, though we’re not sure what colour or number the built will be!
PM2915

Peugeot 301 Aerodynamique Convertible - kit. Also available PM2915M - built

£39.55

A great deal of thought has obviously gone into the creation of this kit. As is quite common for subjects of this style, the swept wings and running boards are a separate casting to the main body making the two-tone paint finish easier. There is plenty of p/e detail including the little vents in the sides of the bonnet and lots of small interior parts. None of it’s particularly innovative but it is all very well done.
PM2917

Maserati Tipo 63 Sebring 1961 - kit. Also available PM2917M - built

£39.55

Another recent plea in our wish list was for the Le Mans Maserati T63. Well here’s the Sebring car, so we’re getting close! The shape looks pretty good and the decoration is accurate for the race, down to the taped over sponsors decals. The lower tubes for the birdcage chassis are moulded into the floor, while the upper framework which supports the steering column and dashboard is photo-etched.
PM2889

Nissan Pick-Up Dakar 2004 - kit. Also available PM2889M - built

£43.50

The Dakar rally got rather more media coverage in the UK than usual, mainly due to the participation of the driver of one of these cars. Colin McRae joined fellow ex-world Rally Champion and 4-time Dakar winner Ari Vatenen in the Nissan team. PM have done a very good job of capturing the dramatic machines and there is plenty of detail in the kits. The castings are generally clean, all three sheets of decals are well printed (including either driver option) and the photo-etch is very comprehensive. One area that we can’t quite get our heads around is the very complicated rear wing assembly. This is entirely etched and the assembly looks simple enough and well thought out, but applying the carbon effect decals will be fun! It will be interesting to see how this one turns out, it should be excellent.
PM2887M

Peugeot 307 WRC Monte Carlo 2004 - built. Also available PM2887 - kit

£75.15

The overall finish of this hand built is fair, but for slightly ill-fitting side windows and brake discs it would be very good. The decalling of the interior is excellent, the paint finish nice and even and the decalling carefully applied. Most importantly it looks like Gronholm’s car as it appeared on the French daylight stages of the Monte Carlo rally, i.e. with no light pod and with large white squares where the sponsors logos might otherwise go.
