Bernies Game, The Secret World of F1 £17.99
weight 1kg by Terry Lovell

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Bernie Ecclestone is a ruthless and shrewd businessman who has turned F1 around from the dark days of the FISA/FOCA wars and along the way made himself a not inconsiderable fortune. If you’re interested to find out what goes on behind the scenes of the multi-billion Dollar industry that F1 now is then this is a fascinating read. Lovell tells the story from all sides, so we get a look at the good and the bad. Those with inside knowledge may pick up on one or two factual inaccuracies but as they say in Fleet Street, “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story” and a good story it most certainly is. Occasionally the tale gets a little confusing but for the most part it’s a deeply involving read.

Model Cars Made in Italy 1900-90 £26.95
weight 1.2kg by Paolo Rampini

This is not, unfortunately, the definitive guide to the specialist models from the likes of BBR or ABC but a much more general collectors guide to die-cast toys. As such it appears to be very comprehensive with large numbers of high quality photographs of the authors collection and reproductions of various period advertisements and catalogue artwork. The author states that the list of 1:43rd die-casts is, to his knowledge 99% complete and that the lists of larger scale models are approaching 95%. Guide prices are given in US Dollars for all items and wherever possible there are catalogue numbers.

Touring Car World 2002/2003 £14.99
weight 800g by Fabio Ravaioli

This is one of those publications that every year goes straight into our library in the hope that, in the not too distant future, many of the colourful subjects within will be featured. The book covers all of the major national and international 2-litre Touring Car activity from around the world with grids and results from 256 races in 17 championships. We start with the ETCC and photos of all of the cars and driver profiles. We are then taken in alphabetical order around the world from Argentina to Sweden. There are over 400 colour photos in total. A must for all tin-top fans.

Ferrari Formula 1 £9.99
weight 1.2 kg by Rainer Schlegelmilch

For over 40 years, legendary German photographer Rainer Schlegelmilch has been following Formula 1 and Ferrari in particular. Unlike his previous books, this has a very small format (about the same size as a CD) but there are nearly 800 pages packed with his spectacular photographs. Captions and introductions are kept brief and are in both German and English but it’s the photos that are allowed to do the talking, whether a sequence of Ickx’ terrifying 1970 Jarama crash or one of the wonderful driver portraits which have their own chapter. Many of the photos are familiar but still great value.

Standard Catalog of Die-Cast Vehicles £19.99
weight 1.8 kg Edited by Dan Stearns

This huge soft-bound volume is an identification and price guide for many of the major die-cast toys that we all played with years ago. The older manufacturers featured include Corgi, Dinky, Matchbox and Johhny Lightning, while we’re brought more up to date with makers such as Minichamps and GMP. The subjects included are those that were/are generally available on the US and UK markets and don’t include any of the mainland European brands. The number of subjects that are illustrated is particularly impressive, especially the much older ones, though while there is a colour section, most pictures are in black and white.

Concept Car Design, Driving the Dream £24.99
weight 1.5kg by Jonathan Bell

It seems that barely a month passes without another volume on concept cars appears and the good news is that most of them, this one included, are jolly good. Unlike many of the previous releases this gets under the skin of many of the more recent designs and gives the reader an insight into the process behind the creation of these show stoppers. Many of the subjects are familiar with the best that the major manufacturers have to offer, including Audi’s stunning Avus and Rosemeyer, but there are also a few oddities which we missed first time round such as the 1996 Colani Horch. There’s plenty of subject matter in here for enterprising manufacturers and it’s great too if you just like looking at pretty cars!

Le Mans, A Pocket History £9.99
weight 500g by David Blumlein

Following the contributions that David Blumlein has made to Four Small Wheels for a number of years on the history of Le Mans, BH suggested that David ought to write a book based on these articles and he has taken to the task in his inimitable style. The story of the great race is told in logical, bite-sized pieces so the reader can dip in and out at leisure. In addition to the history of the race itself we are given some insight into the social and political events and the effect they had on the race. To illustrate the story David spent many days searching through the LAT archives and has come up with some superb photographs including the only known race shot of the 1932 Citroen. A subject for MCM perhaps? Finally there is a brief section with key historical points, year by year, and an ‘at a glance’ list of all of the winners. All in all it makes for fascinating reading.

Maserati 250F £19.95
weight 1.1kg by David McKinney

The epitomy of the front-engined single-seat racer, there have been a number of histories of the 250F over the years. So why another? Well, for a start this contains a number of previously unpublished photos. Unfortunately these photos are all in black and white but they still illustrate the well written story of these great racers and include many of the privateer cars that are often hard to find reference for. In addition to an in-depth look at the 1954-58 F1 seasons, McKinney shows us what happened to the cars after they became uncompetitive at the highest level. There are the specials, such as the TecMec, and a look at racing activity in America and Australasia. Then there are the cars which are familiar sights in the world of ‘historic racing’ and the Cameron Millar re-creations. Finally we have individual chassis histories and all major race results.

Michele Alboreto, A Champion for a Friend £14.95
weight 1.1kg by Roberto Gurian & Ermanno Barchiesi

This is a very personal tribute to Alboreto from two of the men whom he grew up with in the town of Rozzano. There are few words, just brief introductions to each chapter in both Italian and English and simple captions for the excellent photographs which chart the life and career of this popular figure. Each chapter highlights a section of his career from Formula Monza in 1977 to his last race in a Lamborghini at Monza in 2001. There are also numerous candid photos showing Alboreto at work and play.
