Autocourse CART 2003 £30.00
weight 1.7kg

Now in its 11th year of publication, for a while it looked as this may have been the last annual for the CART series, due to financial problems for the organising body. The good news is that the colourful championship has survived for the time being and this is an in-depth look at last year's championship. In typical Autocourse style there is superb colour photography throughout, illustrating the detailed race reports, driver profiles and season overview. There's a report on the amazing comeback to racing of Alex Zanardi, just two years after losing his legs in that horrific Lausitzring accident and an in depth interview with the new chiefs of CART. A must for fans of US single-seater racing.

Standard Guide to 1:18 Die-Cast £16.99
weight 1.2kg by Merry Dudley
From the publishers of the American magazine Toy Cars & Models this is a fairly detailed collectors guide of large scale die-casts produced in the last 10 years or so. There is a brief introduction and history of each manufacturer before the listing including pricing. Some ranges are more comprehensively illustrated than others and there is a plea from the author at one point for collectors to submit photographs of the missing subjects, if they have them, for a future production. The photos that are included are very good indeed and the production quality is high. It's not our usual market but we know that plenty of you out there do collect the mass produced items as well as kits or hand builts. It makes for fascinating reading and was a real eye-opener for us to see the variety available now.

Touring Car World 2003/2004 £16.99
weight 800g by Fabio Ravaioli
This handy paperback is now in its 10th year of publication and covers the majority of 2-litre touring car action from around the World. The first third of the book is dedicated to the ETC and then we move through the various other national and regional championships. In total sixteen series are covered plus four blue ribband stand alone races such as Macau. For all of the covered races there are of course detailed results as well as overviews of the technical regulations for each country. All chapters are illustrated in vivid colour and show a great many very attractive prospective modelling subjects. A must for all Touring Car fans and one of our library essentials.

Colin Chapman, The Wayward Genius £19.99
weight 800g by Mike Lawrence
As with many great talents, Colin Chapman could be a rather difficult individual but there is no doubting his talent as an engineer. Respected motoring writer Mike Lawrence takes an in depth look at this complex character and his achievements, as well as his mistakes. If we look at the history of Lotus during Chapman's lifetime we see a company that consistently broke new ground, both on the road and race track. It is fair to say (and Lawrence does!) that without Chapman the huge British motor-sports industry that we have today probably wouldn't exist, nor would there have been so many successful British drivers through the 1960's. A thoroughly enthralling read.

Italian Sports Cars PostCARds £8.99
weight 600g by M Carpedi
This is a fun idea. The author is a collector of automotive postcards and has delved into his extensive collection to pick out 45 cards featuring images of sporting Italian machinery. On the back of each card is a summary of the main vehicles visible and all appear to date from the 1950s and 1960s.

Walter Rohrl Diary, Memories of a Champion £35.00
weight 2.1kg by Walter Rohrl & Wilfried Muller
Double World Rally Champion, Walter Rohrl, tells the inside story of his career. Not only was he a superb rally driver but also an accomplished circuit racer with wins in the World Sportscar Championship, IMSA, Trans-Am and the DTM to name but a few. All of his international results are listed along with event winners on the occasions that it wasn't our man, which is a nice touch and typical of the modesty and sense of fair play that comes across. The well written and enjoyable text is illustrated with over 400 photographs, the majority of which are in colour. For the rally coverage many of these images are from the lens of Reinhard Klein which is reason enough to buy a copy!

The Life of Senna £25.00
weight 1.4kg by Tom Rubython
With this year being the 10th anniversary of Senna's fatal accident, we will no doubt get even more biographies of the driver many consider to be the greatest of the modern era. The author clearly thinks he was and in several places states that Schumacher wouldn't have got close to many of his current records. We'll never know. Naturally the author concentrates on the Brazilian's rise through the junior formulae to the pinnacle of motorsport and this has been covered in depth many times before. What has possibly been slightly less well documented are the exact details of what happened that fateful weekend at Imola and the repercussions through the sport, which are covered more thoroughly

These collections of reprinted articles from Unique Publications are getting more and more frustrating. They clearly have access to a superb archive of material and much of it makes fascinating reading but the reproduction quality is shocking. When 50 year old documents are involved then a bit of graininess is expected but ironically these pieces are the best, it's the reprints from recent magazines that are barely visible. On the plus side, as we've already said there are many interesting pieces if you ignore the photos. Also the cutaway drawings included in all but the Ferrari volume have come out quite well.
A NEW rough guide to book weights & postages
GPM has negotiated with Royal Mail a special rate for books to our overseas customers. This works out at approximately:
50p per 100g to Europe - 60p per 100g to Rest of World.
This will enable our far distant customers to buy more books which previously the high cost of posting has prohibited.
