Tamiya are providing
an absolute feast for plastic kit modellers this month. We start with
the latest in the series of high detail 1:12th racing motorcycles,
which is one of the last of the front running two-strokes in the Moto
GP category. Lead rider Norick Abe finished in the points in all 14
races he rode the bike in and finished a creditable 6th in the championship.
The kit accurately captures the four-cylinder machine and removable
cowlings reveal a fully detailed engine and drive train.
|
The Lotus and Celica are both
re-issues of kits originally released in the 1970s but have
stood the test of time well, especially the Lotus. This kit features
a full engine and removable top bodywork and will look great built
straight from the box or with the addition of some of the many accessories
available from GPM.
|
 |
The Rodenstock Celica
would benefit from some better wheels (SCA2405) but will again look
great straight out of the box or with one of the alternative liveries
available. New colour schemes for both of these cars are available
from Studio 27.
One of Tamiyas best road car kits in recent years has been the
360 Modena coupe and this is now available with the main body parts
moulded in fly yellow instead of the more familiar red. Apart from
the colour change we have the same high quality parts seen before
with a fully detailed engine and left hand drive interior.
Known as the Fit in Japan, Hondas latest supermini is known
as the Jazz in Europe and Tamiya have modelled the machine in the
simpler style they favour for most (but not all) of their road car
subjects. Like the Nissan 350Z and Skyline which weve seen in
a slightly different guises before, this would be ideal for fast build
model club competitions. Both the Honda and Nissans feature full interiors
with the option of left or right hand drive but most of the chassis
detail is moulded integrally, unlike the competition subjects.
If youre looking for a really simple build, the Yamaha T-Maxx
super-scooter is a well made snap together kit and features
pre-coloured parts and a rider figure. The figure will need painting
but it is in theory possible to build the bike without any painting
at all. A good way of getting junior involved perhaps? |
| Somewhat more detailed are the
two rally cars. We have seen the basic Subaru kit before and it is
this time offered with details and decoration for the asphalt Tour
de Corse rally. The Mitsubishi is all new and will make a welcome
additon to many collections. |
 |
| Decals in both kits
include either factory driver and crew figures are included in the
Impreza. For those wishing to add extra detail to these already very
good kits, there is plenty of scope including a full engine and metal
bonnet for the Impreza (STUFP2445). |
Every now and then someone will
produce a kit that takes the standard that bit further. Plastic kit
manufacturers take note, Tamiyas Ferrari Enzo is one such kit.
We dont think weve ever seen this level of detail in a
plastic kit of this scale.
|
 |
| Engines and opening
panels we are used to, but with is kit you must first assemble the
complete monocoque structure and then fit all of the other parts to
it. All of the opening panels are designed to hinge and, judging by
the photos in the instructions, fit very well when closed. Just as
we would expect from this market leading company. Although there is
a huge amount of moulded in detail, or perhaps because of it, there
is massive scope here for super-detailing if you so wish (weve
already hear that Sakatsu will be making numerous small parts and
Studio 27 are making an etched fret STUFP2464). There have been plenty
of magazine features showing detailed studio photos, so come on all
you competition modellers out there. This will make a real show stopper.
Being a Tamiya kit it will also build simply straight from the box
if you dont fancy all the extra work. |

We looked at the 1978 version
of this kit in FSW 10/2002 and were so impressed with the quality
of the parts that we made it a model of the month.
 |
 |
| This earlier incarnation
of the first Turbo F1 car has more open rear bodywork when compared
to the later car and as a result all of that lovely detail will be
far easier to see on the completed model. As is the norm with Hiro
kits, the chassis tub is milled from aluminium billet and to this
you add a large number of beautifully cast metal, turned aluminium
and p/e parts. The instructions are pretty clear and offer colour
suggestions. Great engineering and great value. . |

| We start with the Ferrari transkit
which we erroneously listed as 1:20th scale in our arrivals list.
In addition to the clearly printed decals, there is an etched sheet
with wing end-plates front and rear, a tyre stencil, dzus fasteners
and badges. |

|
There is also a
resin crash helmet for which decals are provided. The Honda transkit
consists simply of clearly printed decals and some very finely turned
metal inlet trumpets. The p/e end-plate set will surely be welcomed
by many modellers and one sheet will detail several Tamiya kits. The
endplates supplied are for Benetton B192 and B193, Ferrari F189 and
F310, Tyrrell 020, Leyton House CG901, Williams FW14b, Jordan 191
and Lola T93/00. There are also chassis plates for various other models
and a Goodyear tyre stencil.
The decal sets are all clearly printed and the full car sets include
p/e and fabric seat belt sets. The placement drawings are adequate
but the well printed carbon for the Porsche GT1 is not templated.
Good luck. . |

| This is another of those outrageous
production based Japanese machines that we sadly know very little
about. And we dont care, it looks great! |
 |
| From what we can
understand from the small amount we can decipher from the box artwork
and decoration this is roughly equivalent to a European Group 5 machine
with 570hp in a heavily modified 950kg bodyshell, yes please! The
kit is well detailed with a full interior and will make a spectacular
model providing you can figure out all of the colours required from
the Japanese instructions. There appears to be a large amount of bare
aluminium in the interior so theres plenty of scope, for those
who want to, to get out the Baremetal Foil (BMFA) or Alclad (ALC001). |

Another stack of beautifully etched parts from Acu.Stion. All except
the tyre stencil are intended for Tamiya products and it is the tyre
stencil that we can see the only slight problem with. The lettering
in Bridgestones tyres is directional, with the small arrow always
pointing in the direction of rotation. To accurately paint the left
hand tyre side-walls it will be necessary to paint in the letters,
turn the stencil over and then do the arrows. Fiddly.
The race car sets include seat belt furniture, various grilles and
brake disc facings. Rear wing endplates are included for the Ferrari,
while the Opel gets a windscreen wiper, as do the road cars. |
