We never
cease to be amazed at the quantity of new products that Studio 27
manage to produce every month without any compromise on quality.
 |
 |
We
have already seen kits of all bar two of the 2002 F1 grid from S27
and the new kits offer later season versions of some of these models.
All are modelled on the Japanese GP and feature all of the correct
sponsorship for this race. All should be relatively straightforward
build projects with well drawn instructions to go with the high quality
parts, but colours may be a problem on some. The BAR is simple enough
with plain white bodywork and the Procar red (Tamiya TS049) Ferrari
F2002 similarly so. The Williams will require a two tone finish and
no colour indication is given for the blue. You will have to match
this colour to the clearly printed decals and at least the silver
stripes are supplied to cover the masking line. Two colours are also
required for the Sauber and these are listed on the instructions as
Sauber blue and Petronas blue, not terribly helpful. We dont
have any listing for the main dark blue, though the lighter colour
is included on the decal sheet. Any suggestions? The two F310 kits
show some clever modelling with the main body casting being the same
in both kits and then neatly engineered ancillary parts provide the
low nose for the pretty early season car and high nose for Japan.
|
| Unlike
the regular S27 kits which feature resin bodies with resin, metal
and p/e ancillaries, the high-detail DX range are almost entirely
metal. |
 |
The
main chassis tub is in two parts to which you must attach a vast number
of parts for the engine, transmission, suspension and of course bodywork.
The airfilter covers for the intake stacks are supplied as pre-shaped
fine mesh and other small details include p/e side skirts. Getting
the fit of the bodywork may take a little time to perfect, but the
finished result will be well worth the effort, whether you go for
Andrettis Spanish GP winner or his Canadian machine which the
newly crowned World Champion brought home in 10th following an early
collision.
|
| The
decal sets are all clearly printed and offer wide ranging subjects.
F1 driver Martin Brundle has had a few attempts at the RAC rally and
in 1999 made it to about half distance before he crashed his works
Corolla while Australian series front runner Neal Bates finished 9th
overall when the World Championship visited his home country. |
 |
| The Porsche was
driven by the German legend Walter Rohrl as course car on Rally Deutschland
and was the first Porsche to run on a modern rally for several years.
An interesting and different subject. |

The Stratos and Cobra decals
are intended for Fujimi kits rather than the Tamiya bases for the
other subjects and each offers four options.
|
 |
In the case of the
Cobras that means four models can be built from one pack. The
spectacular Group 5 liveries are for recent Tamiya re-issues and the
Lichtenstein art car in particular will look superb when completed.
The F1 cars are all also for re-issued kits and the Ferrari set again
offers several race and driver options. Four choices again on the
Sauber, with minor details for the two Le Mans practice cars which
were withdrawn due to tyre failures or the Spa and Jerez WSPC winners.
For the more advanced modeller, the metal engine parts set for the
Subaru WRC01 is superb. In addition to the detailed engine, there
is a very fine metal bonnet and various small etched parts. Just the
job for creating that service area diorama, especially if used with
the turned brake-discs and beautiful anodised wheels. The two Nissan
etched frets feature the usual brake details, grilles, wipers etc
and in the 350Z parts there are even two sets of pedals, depending
on whether you are building your kit with left or right hand drive.
The Xsara parts really ought to have a TK reference as, in addition
to a detailed etched fret, there are white metal parts including the
roof top air vent and camera housing and a full decal sheet offering
the choice of any of the works cars on the 2002 Monte.
The early season Lotus 78 transkit includes decals (in the correct
oatmeal colour) a p/e fret including wing endplates, rear wing support
and smaller various bits we still havent worked out. There are
also white metal parts for the roll over bar and complete gearbox
including inboard brakes. The Italian GP set features similar quality
decals and p/e, though the metal parts are restricted to the roll
over bar. |

| RDU2885 |
Corvette Nomad Waldorf Show 1954 |
£52.35

| Both of these transkits are
fairly basic in approach and are really aimed at the experienced builder.
|
 |
In the case of the
Ferrari we are simply provided with an accurate looking resin bodyshell
and vac-formed windows, the rest is to be sourced from either the
Testors/Italeri 250GTO donor kit or your spares box. This body was
originally released about 10 years ago under the Umi banner and the
instructions consist of a magazine article reprint with a basic introduction,
some suggestions and a drawing. The vacform windows arent brilliant
and in the instructions a template is provided for cutting the front
screen from flat material if you prefer.
The Nomad station-wagon was a design exercise built on a 1953 Corvette
and, had it made it to production, we are sure this attractive machine
may well have been popular. The transkit this time is a little more
comprehensive, with accurately shaped body, interior parts, chassis
frame and several vac-formed windows for which an AMT 53 Corvette
base kit is needed. Again the vac-forms are less than clear and some
may wish to use flat sheet instead. In the hands of the skilled and
patient this will create a beautiful model but, like the Ferrari,
youll have to work at it! |

| Somewhat simpler than the kits
offered by rival plastic kit makers, the road cars do at least have
good shapes. Interiors are moulded as simple tubs with most of the
detail moulded in and the kits would make a good basis for those wishing
to build midnight racers or as a simple representation
of 1:1 scale toys that may be in the garage. |
 |
The rally version
of the Lancer is a complete cop out. The parts are nearly identical
to the road car, with the exception of different wheels and decals.
There is no roll-cage and the car should be left hand drive. On the
plus side they should be very simple to build.
The GT40s are much better, with a fair level of detail and even
a few p/e components. As all of these kits share the same basic mouldings,
some remodelling is required for specific versions. Just like on the
other Daytona cars previously released, fuel fillers need moving and
i.d lights removing in some cases. No great problem as the body is
marked on the inside where cuts are needed, filler panels are supplied
and the instructions are reasonably clear. |
