The good folks at Renaissance have obviously been very busy recently and now it looks like it’s our turn! The Ferrari kit offers four race options for the NART entered 330TRi.
The car had the familiar air stabiliser / roll hoop removed from behind the cockpit and this was replaced instead by a simple tubular roll bar behind the driver’s head. There was also a modification to the nose for additional cooling. The kit is typical of one of Renaissance’s classic subject with generally well cast resin for the body and most of the ancillary parts, fine wire wheels, turned inlet trumpets and reasonably clear vacforms. A small amount of excess material will need removing from the resin parts but otherwise it should all be straightforward. When cleaning up the body, some might wish to open up the vents in the rear wings slightly but otherwise the shape looks pretty good. The clearly printed decals also look to be spot on.
The three Maserati’s are well built with fine, realistic paint finishes and some beautifully applied detailing. Particularly impressive is the fine polished edge on the vacforms. One or two of the details are slightly over scale, the side mounted oil fillers for example, but generally they are very attractive models.
We were critical of the built LWB D50 in the last issue as it was built as a Monaco car and, as far as our detailed research suggests, therefore wrong.

The kit however includes decal options for the Argentina and Napoli races and the car appears to be correct for these versions. Apart from the wrong numbers the built model looked very good and when assembled this kit will fill an important gap in the history of Ferrari single-seaters. Since we reviewed the built model Renaissance have provided us with the means to change it to the more accurate Napoli car.
No problems with the little mid-engined OSCA which we’ve also seen recently in hand-built form. The kit looks very simple and will build well to fill an important gap in Le Mans history. Make sure you have a very sharp scalpel ready for this one as the car has an unusual windscreen arrangement and a hole must be cut in the vac-form. The outline is clearly marked and two are provided in case you get it wrong first time!

We were quite surprised when we saw the advanced photos of the two Stanguellini’s as we were expecting these very Italian racers to be in traditional red. A quick check with the Le Mans bible confirms that Etienne hasn’t finally flipped and that these pretty little cars really did run in a pale French blue. The kits are again simple and will build easily into very attractive models, judging by the builts. The most obvious detail change between the two years is the windscreen and, to us, the earlier car looks much better.

There have been a few RSR kits released recently and every manufacturer seems to have a different idea of how to approach the wrap-around rear spoiler arrangement.
These kits certainly have the simplest solution with it moulded into the bodyshell. A separate resin door is included with each kit if you wish to cut open the drivers door and show off the finely detailed interior. A good level of p/e includes all of the window frames and the instructions suggest that you cut out the individual clear sections from the vacform before fitting. It might be easier to use some flat acetate sheet instead. While not exactly ‘shake the box’ kits, these will build with relative ease and will look great when completed. The kit for the 4th placed #46 car also includes decals for Muller and van Lennep’s Nurburgring car.
Somewhat more complicated is the Bentley. The kit has been very well thought out and features a high level of p/e detailing.
The body is cast with the doors open and is intended to be displayed this way. The decals are clearly printed and a sheet of carbon fibre is included for the interior and rear undertray areas. This will build, with care, into a stunning model which, with the open doors, would make a great centrepiece to a Le Mans pitstop diorama.
The final kit from Renaissance this month is the 1:24th scale Porsche SCRS. When we saw the first (Rothmans sponsored) version of this kit a few issues back we had no hesitation to make it a Model of the month.
The same parts are now offered with alternative decals for the red and white Belga sponsored machine that was a familiar sight on the rally stages in 1985. The engine cover is cast separately and reveals a fully detailed motor when opened. The option is also given to open the drivers door. No large scale Porsche collector should be without one of these kits, whether this version or one of those previously released (REN007 Rothmans, REN007B Bastos).
The 1:24th wheels sets will require a little clean-up but are well cast and accurate looking. Slick tyres and resin centre lock nuts are included and further sets of these lock nuts are available as RENA24068.
Previous Ferrari 360 transkits from Renaissance have included a revised front bumper section and Naca duct backing to be cut into the Tamiya (TAM24228 or 24242) bodyshell. This approach has now been revised and we are now supplied with a full resin bodyshell along with resin seats, sundry small details and a set of wheels and tyres. The decals are very clearly printed but a three coloured paint finish is required. The instructions suggest you trace the white stripes on the decal and use these to make masks.
The rally car subjects are all very colourful with yellow very much in evidence. The Sierra transkit includes wheels, a passenger seat and various other small details to convert the Tamiya touring car kit (TAM24080 or 24081) into Auriol’s red and yellow rally machine.
The two Peugeot liveries are simple decal sets and can be used on any of the earlier 206WRC kits from Tamiya but not the 2002 car (TAM24255) as the bonnet is wrong. Timo Salonen drove the yellow Shell car and this will be a simple conversion. Multiple motorcycle World Champion Valentino Rossi’s Michelin sponsored Peugeot will be slightly more involved with a two tone paint finish required, but the extra time will be well worth it. There is plenty of reference material available for this subject and we expect it will prove very popular.
New 1:43rd decal sheets
COL43113 Seatbelt Decals

£5.50

COL43134 Rally Plates Monte Carlo 99/00/01/02

£5.50

COL43108 Tyre Manufacturers Decals

£5.00

All of these sheets offer great value and will make extremely useful additions to the spares box. They are clearly printed with good colour registration and will be of particular interest to rally modellers, though the seat belts and tyre manufacturer’s logos will also be good for GT and Touring cars. Sixty six-point harnesses of various brands and colours are included on the seat belt set, while the rally plates should deal with about fifteen cars. The tyre logos are for vehicle bodywork or trackside decoration and include Goodyear, Pirelli, Bridgestone and Firestone in various colours.
