Licensing issues

F1 news
We have touched on the high royalty demands of some motor manufacturers before and this is the reason that models are often not made. One model manufacturer has asked us to tell you of the terms of a contract they recently refused to enter into with a major motor company.
Unfortunately after one year of discussion, by letter, with the legal department of X, I received a contract which insists on the following:
4,000 Euro per year as fixed royalties
+ 6% royalties on every model sold
+ A special liability insurance covering all risks for 2 million US Dollars in favour of the car manufacturer, at my expense, but this contract ensures nothing for me.
+ All the models they like for a trade price less 15%
+ 1-5 pieces, free of charge, of any new model of their brand produced.
As you can understand there is no sense to pursue this contact as it will leave nothing for me! They have not seen, or asked to see, my models. They are interested only in the money and if you produce good or bad models it is not important.

Most of the individual points seem quite reasonable (we’ve heard of much larger sums), but taken as a whole it would be impossible for a small manufacturer to make a living. The irony is that the cost to the motor companies of drawing up these contracts, probably exceeds the income they would receive from them.

The bad news for the competition is that this year’s Ferrari is apparently significantly quicker than last year’s, so we hope that McLaren, Williams et al have done their homework properly over the winter. With the new one shot qualifying and ban on refuelling the cars between qualifying and the start of the race, we could be seeing a very interesting grid in Australia ! I wonder what odds they’re giving for an all Minardi front row?
BBR have already announced the press launch version of the Ferrari 2003-GA (BBM115) and we have no doubt that others will follow when it starts winning. Tameo will also be producing the Ferrari in race trim and are in negotiation with various other teams for licensing agreements. While things may be a little limited for the modern F1 modeller there are plenty of historic subjects on the horizon. Tameo are busy working on a number of models which include the 1978 McLaren M28 (TMK318) & 1974 Hexagon Brabham BT44 (TMK319), both driven by Watson. There will also be a Long Beach GP version of the Ferrari 126C2 (TMK320) with the staggered rear wing and an important gap filler in modern F1 history, Michael Schumacher’s F1 debut Jordan 191 from Spa (TMK322). Then of course, there are also new models coming in the World Championship series, Surtees’ Ferrari 158 (TMKWCT64) and Piquet’s Williams FW11b (TMKWCT87).
Scale Racing Cars are also keeping themselves out of mischief. Kits of the Brabham BT49 (SRC056) have just arrived and the photo below is of the prototype parts for the long awaited Spirit Honda (SRC059 & SRC061).

Also coming from SRC will be some very colourful privateer cars from the late 70’s and early 80’s. Keke Rosberg’s Theodore Racing Wolf will be released soon as SRC062 and SRC063 will offer the choice of two colourful Williams FW07’s, Kevin Cogan’s Rainbow Jeans car and Desire Wilson’s Murjani machine.
Modelismo Leonardo have released the first in their very comprehensive selection of Ferrari 156 Sharknose kits (MLK4301 - MLK4309) and will be following these with a number of March kits, to include the Eiffeland 721 from Belgium (MLK4312) and South Africa (MLK4313) and the works 721G (MLK4311) and 741 (MLK4310). First impressions of this new range are pretty good and the straightforward modelling style seems to be very similar to MG Models.
Going back a little further in GP history, we now have three manufacturers, Renaissance, Trajectoire and Jade, charting the Maserati 250F story, SMTS are filling many gaps in the Lotus and BRM stories and this is all just in 1:43rd scale.
Who said there are no F1 kits?

God dwells in small things

While in northern Europe for Retromobile, Italian collector Pierro Tecchio usually pops across that little stretch of water which separates the rest of Europe from the mainland and comes to see us. He usually brings one of his latest acquisitions and this visit was no exception, though he doesn’t usually bring the model maker as well.

The model in question is the gorgeous Ferrari 312PB shown here, which was built using the recently released Piranha kit (RUP009) as a base. We were very pleased to meet and (carefully) shake the hand of the Japanese master model maker, Akihiro Kamimura who’s work this amazing piece is.
The level of realism in the fine details has to be seen to be believed and the lengths Mr Kamimura goes to ensure this can be quite extreme. If you want to see more and read how this and many other pieces were created logon to www.linkclub.or.jp/~ak-model/
