Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Autos £34.99
weight 1.8kg by Louis Sugahara
This
incredibly detailed study of the 'Silver Arrows' was originally
published in Japan in 1997 but is now available in Europe. It tells
the story of all of the factory Mercedes racers from W25 to 300SLR
with a very informative text (if you read German!) and plenty of
illustrations. Period photography is used throughout, some images
being quite familiar, others less so but it is the huge quantity
of excellent scale drawings that really make this interesting.
All significant race variations are clearly shown and the detail
includes different windscreen configurations for specific drivers.
Most of these drawings are in profile, but where there are major
nose or tail changes these too are clearly indicated. A must for
the serious Mercedes modeller. German Text.

Alberto Ascari, The First Double
Champ £16.99
ISBN284707063X
Niki Lauda, The Non-Conformist £16.99
weight 1.5kg each by Peirre Menard & Jacques Vassal
There
appears to be no logic in the way that this series of very good
driver biographies is released, it seems that their numbering
of the series (Ascari is #2 and Lauda #9) is rather pointless but
this may just be that they are being translated from their original
French publications out of sequence.
Both chart the lives of an all-time great driver from the dawn
of his racing career to a premature demise in the case of Ascari
and the present day for Lauda. Both stories are superbly illustrated
with period photography and moves in a steady chronological progression
highlighting the highs and the lows. Each
Formula One car driven is highlighted with a series of colour drawings
and specifications.
Comprehensive results for both drivers show all of their F1 race
results along with other major non-Championship or sportscar races.
This series will build into a very useful mini-library when all
15 titles have finally been produced. In addition to these two
we have already seen Fangio, Moss, Prost & Senna, while to
come are Brabham, Clark, Graham Hill, Stewart, Fittipaldi, Villeneuve,
Piquet, Mansell & Schumacher.

Le Mans 55, Crash That Changed Racing £19.99
weight 1.1kg by Christopher Hilton
This
is a very difficult and emotive subject to tackle in a book and there
is always
the danger that sensationalism will creep in. However, Christopher Hilton is
a well respected motor-racing historian and biographer for good reason, he has
handled the subject with great thoroughness and tact. The research has been exhaustive
and a huge number of people who were involved either directly or indirectly with
the events of June 1955 have been interviewed. The accident itself is analysed
as are the repercussions that have changed (for the better) the face of motorsport
and motoring in general over the following 50 years.

are used to illustrate the well written and informative text and tell the story

Formula 1 Yearbook 2004/05 £9.99
weight 2.3 kg
Once again these annuals offer superb value. Starting with the
F1 edition, there are profiles of each team and its drivers, including
outline specifications for the cars, and a brief summary of each
teams achievements during the year. A highlights section picks
out the major behind the scenes stories of the season, a historical
chapter telling the story of John Surtees' 1964 World Championship
and then there's the vivid 'Atmosphere' photographic section. Then
of course we get on to the main event. The story of each race,
from initial qualifying to the chequered flag, is told with a well
written text, plenty of graphics and results and of course, very
useful photographs. There are one or two little errors where things
have been slightly lost in translation but it doesn't detract from
the reader's enjoyment.

Rally Yearbook 2004/2005 £16.99
weight 2.1 kg
The reliance on photographs in the format of these books really
works well in the Rally edition, as the wildly varying scenery
that hosts the WRC makes for some truly spectacular images. All
of the works teams are profiled and there are dimensions and specifications
given for the leading factory entries. With the retirement at the
end of 2004 of one of the greatest and most respected drivers that
the sport has seen, the historical section naturally profiles the
illustrious career of Carlos Sainz. The race reports concentrate
almost entirely on the WRC but mention is made of the PWRC and
JWRC categories where appropriate, even if it is just results and
no photos for many of the events.

Motorcycle Yearbook 2004/2005 £16.99
weight 2.2kg
With three full blown World Championship categories running at
each Moto GP race meeting and far fewer manufacturers involved,
the layout of the Motorcycle yearbook is slightly different to
the two volumes above. Each manufacturer gets a couple of pages
and this is then broken down into very brief team profiles of the
major entrants. This is repeated for each category, be it Moto
GP, 250cc or 125cc. There are then interviews with the riders who
won the championships in each class before we move on to the race
reports. Again these are three stage reports and capture the often
spectacular action superbly with the aid of plenty of excellent
photos.

Aston Martin DB2, DB2/4, DB3 In Detail £35.00
by Nick Walker
ISBN0954106350
Lagonda 4.5 Litre and V12 In Detail £35.00
weight 1.3kg each by Arnold Davey
The titles say 'In Detail' and they certainly appear to be very
close to being definitive histories. We have noticed a couple of
the special bodied cars missing
from the Aston volume, but if you are looking for information on factory cars,
whether road or works race versions, it is excellent. Some of the specials, such
as the beautiful Arnolt-Bertone cars are included however.
The Lagonda book follows a similar format and tells of the history of the marque
as well as those of the specific models featured. In both volumes there are detailed
specification and indices of production histories, though not by specific chassis
number, just the range of numbers and how many
were built. Both stories are supported by a wealth of superb photographs, from
period archives and of cars as they are now. Very useful library additions for
anyone interested in the history of Aston Martin and Lagonda.
